Service Day

Sleepless Night

  • Attendance goal of 1,000 youth and families

Event FAQs

WHAT TIME DOES THE EVENT START?

Each service site will have a specific starting time during the day of October 13th. When you register for your Service Site, you will be provided these details. One week out from the event, you will receive the exact details of your service site so you know exactly where to arrive. Doors for the evening program at Liberty Station open at 4 PM.

IS SLEEPING OUT OVERNIGHT OPTIONAL?

Yes, sleeping out overnight is optional. We encourage everyone to stay overnight and experience the sleep-out, but participants are free to leave at any point in the evening.

IS THERE A FEE TO PARTICIPATE IN SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO?

The Registration cost for Sleepless 2018 will $35 for the Service Day + Sleepless Night or $25 for the Sleepless Night only.  We will be offering an Early Bird Ticket Price for anyone that registers before September 22nd! The ticket price includes the Service Day opportunity of your choice, dinner provided at 6 PM, a Sleepless San Diego 2018 T-shirt, entrance into the Sleepless evening program at Liberty Station (5-10 PM) and the option to sleep-out overnight. The Registration ticket price helps the San Diego Rescue Mission (a 501c3 Non-profit) cover the basic costs of hosting this incredible event. After you register, we encourage all participants (groups and individuals) to create a fundraising page where they can raise funds to support the homeless men, women and children at the San Diego Rescue Mission Every dollar from your fundraising page will go directly help support the residents of the Rescue Mission who are currently experiencing homelessness.

IS THERE PARKING AVAILABLE?

There is a large free parking lot directly on site.

WHAT ARE THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS?

The Sleep-out will begin at 10 PM on Saturday night. Each sleeper will have an opportunity to use a cot and cardboard to sleep in solidarity with our brothes and sisters experiencing homelessness. Bring everything you need to spend the night outdoors (sleeping bags, pillows, blankets). There will be overnight security and staff on-site throughout the night to keep the location safe and secure for all sleepers.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?

SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO will continue as planned. The homeless sleep outside even in unfavorable weather.

WILL SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO BE SAFE?

Yes, there will be private security guards on site all night, all areas will be well-lit, and a fence will surround the event’s perimeter. This event will bring together concerned members of the community (not homeless individuals).

DO PARTICIPANTS HAVE RE-ENTRY PRIVILEGES?

Students under 18 not be allowed to exit and re-enter without a parent or guardian. Parents and Leaders may re-enter but need to be checked in by 8 PM.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME TO SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO?

Bring items you will need to be warm at night. However, please pack lightly since space around your sleeping area will be very limited. Ideas include:

  • Sleeping bag and Pillow
  • Water
  • Sweatshirt
  • Hat
  • Earplugs
  • Snacks in unopened sealed containers ( Refreshments will be provided and there will be additional food for sale)

PLEASE DO NOT BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS – THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED & YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THEM IN YOUR CAR.

  • Pocketknives / Weapons of any kind
  • Tents
  • Air Mattresses
  • Pets
  • Umbrellas
  • Bicycles
  • Stereo systems
  • Nalgene Water Bottles
  • Opened water bottles (bottled water will be provided and you may bring your own sealed bottled water)

WHAT ABOUT VALUABLES / LEAVING ITEMS NEAR MY SLEEPING AREA?

Do not leave valuables on or near your sleeping area. Keep them in your car instead. SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO, the San Diego Rescue Mission, and its Sleepless Alliance partner non-profit organizations are not responsible for lost or stolen items during the event.

CAN I BRING MY OWN FOOD?

Yes, participants can bring their own food. The San Diego Rescue Mission’s very own Catering Team will be on site to provide dinner, which is included in your ticket price. Mahalo Shaved Ice will also be on site to provide Hawaiian Shaved Ice for purchase. Starbucks will be on site until 7 PM to provide complimentary hot and iced coffee.

ARE BATHROOMS AVAILABLE?

Yes, there will be portable toilets available on site.

WILL THERE BE A FIRST AID STATION ON-SITE?

Yes.

IS THERE AN AGE MINIMUM?

Yes. We require that all participants be above age 5 and that those under 18 be accompanied by a parent, youth pastor or supervisor.

IS THERE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO GET TO SLEEPLESS SAN DIEGO?

WHAT WILL THE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY INCLUDE?

15-25 Sleepless participants will volunteer at each service location where they will complete a project to benefit homeless men, women and children in our community. Example of service opportuntities include feeding a meal to the homeless, providing mobile showers to the homeless, school clean-up and beautification and serving the residents at the San Diego Rescue Mission.
